Ulster Superbike title protagonists Jonny Campbell and Ryan Gibson claimed a victory apiece on the opening day of the fifth round of the championship at Kirkistown in Co Down on Friday.

The two-day meeting is being promoted by the Temple Club in collaboration with Motorsport Enterprises.

Lisburn’s Campbell went into the fifth round holding a 21-point lead over Gibson and secured his fifth victory of the season after a three-way scrap for the top spot.

The 20-year-old narrowly held off McAdoo Racing Kawasaki’s Korie McGreevy by just under four tenths of a second in race one to take the win on his Magic Bullet Yamaha after seven laps, with Gibson only have a second back on his BMW as the trio were covered by less than a second at the finish.

Aaron McBride (BMW), Alan Kenny (Yamaha) and Dean McMaster (J McC Roofing Racing Kawasaki) completed the top six.

Former British Supersport and Superstock race winner Andy Reid, who joined Jason McCaw’s J McC Racing team to compete in the Ulster Superbike Championship this year after five years away from the sport, finished in 10th position.

Reid missed the opening round due to personal commitments and was then ruled out of the next three rounds after destroying his Kawasaki ZX-10 in a crash in qualifying at Bishopscourt at the second round of the series at the end of March.

Campbell bagged the final rostrum position on his Yamaha R1 in third, 2.258s behind McGreevy, while Ross Irwin – who had a DNF in the opener – took fourth on his Magic Bullet Honda, only three tenths behind title pacesetter Campbell.

McMaster and Kenny rounded out the top six while Jordanstown’s Reid improved to eighth behind McBride.

In the Supersport class, ex-British Junior Superstock champion McGreevy was in dominant form on the McAdoo Racing Kawasaki.

McGreevy won the first race by over three seconds from Randalstown’s Christian Elkin (DynoCentre NI Yamaha), who only just squeezed out Belfast’s Mark Conlin (NRG Ducati) for third by 0.079s.

Andrew Smyth was fourth on his MPW Kawasaki ahead of Campbell (Magic Bullet Yamaha) and Ajay Carey (Magic Bullet Yamaha).

McGreevy wrapped up a double in the class after seeing off Elkin by 1.5s in race two, with Campbell moving up to third ahead of Smyth. Conlin and Carey finalised the top half dozen.

McGreevy was celebrating a Friday four-timer after also winning both Supertwin races, beating Elkin in the first by a mere five hundredths of a second and prevailing in race two by 0.3s.

A packed programme of racing takes place on Saturday, with the action set to commence at approximately 10am. Admission is £15, with under 16s free.
